Joined by Moacyr Luz and Vando Oliveira, Brazilian samba legend Neguinho da Beija-Flor launches a new ongoing project in Lisbon on March 7.
A samba circle takes root in Lisbon
On March 7, 2026, Neguinho da Beija-Flor brings his Roda de Samba — a traditional Brazilian samba circle — to Europe for the first time, at Lisboa Ao Vivo (LAV) in Lisbon. The debut edition features special guests Moacyr Luz and Vando Oliveira, weaving together tradition, memory, and the living energy of contemporary samba on a European stage.
The show marks a new chapter in the international career of one of Brazil’s most iconic popular voices. Designed as a recurring project, the samba circle cements Lisbon as a permanent gathering point for Brazilian samba, with special guests at every edition.
Two heavyweights join the stage
Moacyr Luz is a cornerstone of Rio de Janeiro’s samba scene — composer of classics such as Saudades da Guanabara, Vida da Minha Vida, and Cabô, Meu Pai. He also created the Samba do Trabalhador, one of Rio’s most celebrated weekly samba gatherings, credited with uniting generations of musicians. His presence gives the debut an unmistakable authorial and historical weight.
Vando Oliveira, a samba artist with a loyal following and an international career, is Neguinho’s nephew and a German citizen based in Europe. He appears on Neguinho’s album Empretecendo, on the track Samba, O Gosto da Minha Comida.
Launching this samba circle in Portugal alongside Moa means a great deal. He is a fundamental composer — someone who helped keep samba alive in the circles, with truth and respect for our history. Neguinho da Beija-Flor
After 50 years at Beija-Flor, a new era begins
Born Luiz Antônio Feliciano Marcondes in Vila Isabel and raised in Nova Iguaçu, in Rio’s Baixada Fluminense, Neguinho da Beija-Flor joined the Beija-Flor de Nilópolis samba school in 1975. The following year, he debuted at Carnival singing Sonhar com Rei Dá Leão, the samba that took the school to its first championship. Over a career spanning more than 30 albums, he authored hits including O Campeão, Deusa da Passarela, and Negra Ângela.
After closing a historic 50-year chapter as Beija-Flor’s lead vocalist, Neguinho remains fully active as an artist. The setlist for the Roda de Samba draws from his greatest hits and from Empretecendo, the first musical production helmed by fellow samba star Xande de Pilares.
The samba circle is where samba truly breathes. It is close, collective, an exchange. Lisbon has always welcomed me with such warmth, so turning that into a monthly gathering is an enormous joy. Nothing makes me happier than seeing samba conquer the world. That is Brazil! Neguinho da Beija-Flor
