Hosted by Sophia Razel, the four-part series “Ubuntu” debuts Nov 9 on Rádio Cultura FM, exploring the Black legacy in classical music.

In celebration of Black Awareness Month, Rádio Cultura FM (103.3) launches the new series “Ubuntu – The Black Presence in Classical Music” this Sunday (Nov 9) at 2 p.m. Presented by Sophia Razel, the four-episode production highlights the contributions, influence, and major interpreters of Black artists in classical music.

Black presence in concert music

Inspired by the Bantu philosophy “I am because we are”, the series reflects on heritage, representation, and inclusion. It revisits composers such as Chevalier de Saint-Georges, José Maurício Garcia Nunes, and José White Lafitte—19th-century figures whose works faced social barriers and historical erasure.

Their stories intertwine with those of contemporary musicians who share their journeys, challenges, and the importance of representation and ancestry in building their artistic identity. “Ubuntu” offers a thoughtful look at how Black culture shapes and enriches the classical music landscape.

Interviews and featured artists

The series includes testimonies from violinist Matteus “Bazooka” Farias, dedicated to promoting Black composers; guitarists João Luiz Rezende and Gabriele Leite; sopranist Bruno de Sá; and conductors João Rocha and Alba Bomfim, who reflect on Black representation in Brazil’s and the world’s concert scenes.

With an educational and poetic approach, “Ubuntu” reinforces Rádio Cultura FM’s mission to promote diversity and highlight the dialogue between tradition and contemporary creation in music.
