One of Rio de Janeiro’s most iconic cultural venues is hosting a deeply moving tribute to Brazilian samba this Saturday. “Canto de Rainha” (“Song of a Queen”) brings together the legacy of Dona Ivone Lara and the voice of Sarah, a singer who spent years as part of the legend’s own backing vocal group — making this far more than just a cover show.

A legacy kept alive from the inside

The project was conceived by André Lara, Dona Ivone’s grandson, with a clear mission: to preserve and honor her artistic legacy. The tribute is especially meaningful this week, as it falls around the anniversary of the samba icon’s birth and memory.

Dona Ivone Lara stands as a pioneering figure in Brazilian samba — a composer, singer, and prominent Baiana at the Império Serrano samba school who broke barriers in a world long dominated by men. To revisit her work today is both a cultural act of resistance and a celebration of Brazilian identity.

Interpreted by singer Sarah, who spent years as part of Dona Ivone Lara’s backing vocal group, the show revisits classic songs and reinforces the artist’s importance as a pioneering woman in the world of samba.

Saturday starts with feijoada and live samba

Before the nighttime tribute, Saturday at Rio Scenarium kicks off with the house’s beloved feijoada — Brazil’s iconic black bean stew — served to the live sound of Família Moadir from noon to 6 PM. Later, Dandara Alves invites Yago Costa for a special set from 8:30 PM to 11 PM.

Full week lineup

The week is packed with talent across multiple nights. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, all guests pay half-price admission.
