For anyone who has always wanted to sing but never found the right place to start, a genuine opportunity has opened up in Largo do Machado, in Rio’s South Zone. Singer and vocal teacher Cacala Carvalho invites the public to a free open class on Tuesday, March 3, at 7:15 PM, at EDEM — Rua Gago Coutinho, 14 — ahead of the eighth edition of her popular singing workshop “Um Canto pra Chamar de Seu” (A Corner to Call Your Own).

Popular singing for adult beginners

The popular singing workshop is designed for adults who enjoy vocal music but have not yet pursued formal training. The four-month program runs from March 10 to July 5, with weekly classes on Tuesdays from 7:15 to 8:45 PM, limited to 20 participants. Each cohort closes with a collective musical performance shaped by the group throughout the process.

Cacala will be joined by guitarist and bassist Canequinha. Both artists are signed to Zênitha Música, the label partnering with the project. Enrollment is open until March 10, at a monthly fee of R$290.

Voice, body, and human connection

The workshop goes well beyond vocal technique. For Cacala, the singing voice is inseparable from the body and carries the unique story of each individual. Participants are invited to position themselves both collectively and personally, sharing their histories through the songs chosen for the repertoire.

It’s a popular singing workshop for amateur singers, now in its eighth edition. It’s more than singing — it’s enchantment, encounter, affection, and potential. An experience of exchange and belonging. Cacala Carvalho, singer and workshop instructor

The approach is deliberately horizontal: there is no hierarchy among participants. Every voice, regardless of prior experience, is treated as equally valid and valuable.

The artists behind the project

Cacala Carvalho is a singer, composer, arranger, and vocal coach based in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. She holds a master’s degree in Psychology from PUC-RJ (1991) and a postgraduate specialization in Vocal Pedagogy from Faculdade Santa Marcelina-SP (2022). Since 2001, she has been a member of the acclaimed samba vocal group Arranco de Varsóvia, which released the praised CD “Na panela pra dançar” in 2014. She also leads the Flor do Canto Vocal Group (Niterói, founded 2007) and the Coral do Casarão da Região Oceânica de Niterói (since 2016). She studied guitar, music theory, harmony, and ear training at Rio Música with professors Fernando Caneca, Sérgio Mello Benevenuto, and Carlos Almada from 1989 to 1993.

Canequinha is a guitarist and composer. Growing up in a musical household — his parents are guitarist Fernando Caneca and singer Cacala Carvalho — he studied at the Villa Lobos School of Music and trained in the “O Passo” musicalization method, created by Lucas Ciavatta. He later enrolled in the Music Faculty of UFRJ, admitted in fourth place for the Music Teaching degree before transferring to the Composition program. He spent 10 years touring Brazil with the stage show Cássia Eller — O Musical, performing across all Brazilian state capitals between 2014 and 2024.
