OSJ Chiquinha Gonzaga performs Soul Mais Eu on November 24 at the Rio Municipal with guest artist Sandra Sá.
Singer Sandra Sá is the special guest of the concert Soul Mais Eu – A Tribute to Black Consciousness Day, presented by the Chiquinha Gonzaga Youth Symphony Orchestra on November 24 at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. The event celebrates the resistance and the historic struggle of the Black population for equality.
The project receives master sponsorship from Petrogal Brasil, a Galp/Sinopec joint-venture, and sponsorship from Zurich Santander, through the Federal Law for Cultural Incentive. It also has support from the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro and the Rio de Janeiro State Secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy.
Female leadership and representation
Composed exclusively of girls from Rio de Janeiro’s public school system, most of them Black, the OSJ Chiquinha Gonzaga celebrates the opportunity to share the stage with Sandra Sá, widely recognized for her unique voice and strong artistic presence. Conductor Vilane Trindade highlights that Sandra’s participation strengthens the identity of the young musicians and inspires their artistic paths.
“Having Sandra Sá as a guest is more than special. Besides her undeniable talent, she is a Black woman who fought hard to get where she is and opened doors for the new generation. She faced discrimination that she transformed into music, and this reality is also present in the lives of the Chiquinhas,” says the conductor.
The concert also features singer Kelly Faé, whose powerful and delicate vocals complement the repertoire, which includes works by Alceu Valença, Caetano Veloso, Djavan, Dorival Caymmi, Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes, Milton Nascimento, Manoel Ferreira Lima and Chiquinha Gonzaga.
About the Chiquinha Gonzaga Youth Symphony Orchestra
Created in 2021 to expand female representation in orchestral music, the OSJ Chiquinha Gonzaga brings together young musicians under the direction of Priscila Bomfim, the first woman to conduct an opera at the Theatro Municipal. The ensemble honors the legacy of Chiquinha Gonzaga, the first woman conductor in Brazil, and has performed in Brazil, the United States, Spain, France, Portugal and Switzerland, alongside artists such as Alexandre Nero, Elba Ramalho, Maria Gadú, Mônica Salmaso, Toni Garrido and Wanderléa.
The orchestra is supported by master sponsorship from Petrogal Brasil, a Galp/Sinopec joint-venture, and sponsorship from Zurich Santander, both through the Federal Law for Cultural Incentive.
