Sobrado da Cidade honors João Donato with Ricardo Pontes on Saturday and a lively chorinho circle on Sunday.
In the heart of Rio’s Historic Center, the Sobrado da Cidade has become a cultural haven where music, cuisine, and history meet. This weekend, its 19th-century townhouse on Rua do Rosário, 34, opens for two vibrant afternoons blending tradition and musical excellence.
Saturday jazz pays tribute to João Donato
On February 28, from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM, the Jazz no Sobrado project presents a special edition in honor of pianist and composer João Donato. The tribute is led by saxophonist Ricardo Pontes—a longtime collaborator of Donato—joined by the venue’s house band: Adrian Barbet (bass), Vanessa Rodrigues (keys), Didac Tiago (percussion), and Roberto Rutigliano (drums).
The show highlights Donato’s seamless fusion of jazz, bossa nova, and Brazilian rhythm.
A curated menu by chef Alice Isha, cocktails, and desserts complement the musical afternoon, creating a refined experience that celebrates Rio’s artistic soul.
Sunday brings the spirit of chorinho
On March 1, the venue hosts its traditional Roda de Chorinho, featuring the works of icons like Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Waldir Azevedo, and Chiquinha Gonzaga, turning lunchtime into a heartfelt musical gathering.
