2nd Nations Gathering celebrates cultural diversity at Museu da República

Free event at Museu da República, November 22–23, celebrates Rio de Janeiro’s diverse traditions and ancestral heritage.
The Museu da República, located in Catete, will host the 2nd Nations Gathering – Knowledge of the State of Rio de Janeiro on November 22 and 23, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with free admission. The event celebrates cultural diversity, bringing together Indigenous peoples, quilombolas, Roma communities, Afro-Brazilian groups, capoeira circles, and samba collectives in a vibrant tribute to the state’s living heritage.
Tradition, ancestry, and belonging
In an expanded edition, the festival highlights the preservation of ancestral memory and the role of Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous cultures, held during Brazil’s Black Awareness Month. Event creator Marcelo Fritz explains that the gathering aims to “unite tradition and innovation, showing that our diversity is both productive and visionary.”
The program includes over 30 book launches, film screenings, workshops, lectures, and art and fashion exhibitions, along with tributes to major cultural figures such as José Beniste, Mãe Márcia d’ Oxum, Márcio d’ Jagun, Professor Ivanir dos Santos, and Cigana Kátja Bastos.
Performances and cultural expressions
The main stage will feature performances by Awurê, Cacique de Ramos (Grupo Caciqueano), Banda Afro Tafaraogi, Banda Cigana, Jongo Filhos de Benedito, and the Portela Samba School drum section. There will also be capoeira and maculelê circles, and traditional dances with the participation of Barra Velha (BA), Aldeia Velha (BA), and Aldeia Maracanã (RJ) Indigenous villages.
The agenda includes talks on samba, Roma culture, Afro-Brazilian religions, and traditional communities, as well as Xirê rituals honoring umbanda and candomblé nations. Around 2,000 visitors are expected over the two days.
Gastronomy, art, and creative economy
The multicultural fair will bring together over 90 exhibitors, offering Afro-Brazilian cuisine, fashion, handcrafted jewelry, and artisanal products. Confirmed participants include Flor de Oyá Boutique, Brasil Zulu Moda Afro, Acessórios Dafé, Cervejaria Farra Bier, and Angú & Cia. The event is organized by ICAPRA – Cultural Institute for the Support and Research of Afro Traditions, founded in 1998.
