Casa Ronald RJ is taking applications for its 2026 volunteer program to support children with cancer and their families in Maracanã, Rio.
Casa Ronald RJ has opened applications for its 2026 Volunteer Program. With 31 years of experience supporting Rio de Janeiro’s public hospitals, the organization currently counts around 350 active volunteers and aims to bring in new people to sustain and expand its free, humane support for children and teenagers undergoing cancer treatment, as well as their families.
What volunteers do at Casa Ronald RJ
Volunteers play a central role in the house’s daily routine and work across several areas. Tasks include welcoming families at reception, helping in the kitchen, organizing events, running recreational workshops, and driving guests to hospitals.
According to the organization, volunteering helps build emotional bonds and ensures a safe, caring environment throughout oncology treatment.
A long-time volunteer’s story
One example is Maiko Arpino, known as “Uncle Maiko,” who has volunteered for 29 years. A business administrator, now 60, he has dedicated one day a week to the organization since its early days.
“I worked for an organization that donated food to other causes, and that’s how I met Casa Ronald, which was just starting. I came to deliver about 300 kilos of food and fell in love. It was love at first sight because of the warm welcome I received from the children,” he recalls.
Requirements and program rules
To apply for the 2026 Volunteer Program, candidates must be over 18, identify with the organization’s mission, and commit at least three hours per week on a fixed schedule.
Casa Ronald RJ notes that it does not provide transportation or meal stipends. The house also follows religious neutrality and does not allow religious activities, medical assistance, or health counseling, even if offered by healthcare professionals.
If candidates have a personal history of cancer or a close family member affected by the disease, at least one year must have passed since the control phase or since the bereavement.
On-site openings in Maracanã
Openings are for on-site work at Casa Ronald RJ headquarters at Rua Pedro Guedes, 44, in Maracanã. The organization reports higher demand on weekdays and Saturdays, especially within its lodging program.
The house can currently accommodate more than 60 families at the same time. In addition to lodging, it provides meals, hospital transportation, social assistance, and comprehensive care programs.
“Here, volunteering goes far beyond operational support. It means being present, listening, and welcoming families who are living through one of the hardest moments of their lives. Volunteering is the foundation of Casa Ronald RJ,” says Carlos Neves, the organization’s operations director.
How to apply and key dates
Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the house, which is open every day, including weekends and holidays, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Groups of more than ten people must schedule in advance.
After the visit, candidates may enter the selection process, which includes interviews, hands-on and theoretical training, and a written assessment after three months of experience to become an official volunteer. Interviews will begin on January 15.
