Illegal wildlife trade surges in summer. Learn how to report it anonymously without risking your safety.
With tourism and travel increasing, so do wild animal offers on roads, fairs, and social media. Under Brazilian law, capturing, transporting, or selling native fauna without authorization is an environmental crime punished with fines and imprisonment. The legal basis lies in Laws 5.197/67 and 9.605/98.
How to report safely
The Ibama Green Line is the main reporting channel. Through an online system, citizens can report location, species, and details of the offer without sharing personal data. State Environmental Police forces also accept anonymous tips, which fuel enforcement and investigation actions.
Campaign promotes anonymous reporting
To raise awareness, the Líbio Institute launched the “Agora Você Sabe” (“Now You Know”) campaign, which combines legal, environmental, and public health information. According to Raquel Machado, the institute’s CEO, “many people avoid reporting out of fear, when in fact, the systems are built to protect informants.”
Sharing this step-by-step guide helps stop animals from circulating in the illegal market.
