In November, Brazil celebrates Black Awareness Month, honoring the historical, cultural, and intellectual contributions of Afro-Brazilians. The key date, November 20, pays tribute to Zumbi dos Palmares, a symbol of resistance against slavery and an invitation to reflect on structural racism, social inequality, and inclusion.
Literature as a voice of memory and resistance
In this context, literature emerges as a powerful tool for memory and transformation, giving visibility to silenced stories and encouraging readers to engage in dialogue about justice and human dignity. With this purpose, author Isa Colli, who has published more than 40 titles, presents her novel “Alice: Love, Loss and Rebirth”, inspired by the experiences of Black women in vulnerable communities.
Based on real experiences from social projects in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region, the book portrays stories of strength and resilience, revealing how love and solidarity can blossom even amid inequality and hardship.
Alice: strength, pain, and rebirth
The protagonist, Alice, is a young Black woman from the Comunidade do Sapo, who faces poverty, prejudice, and violence while striving to protect her siblings. The narrative addresses themes such as social exclusion, illegal adoptions, discrimination, and urban inequality, while also offering moments of tenderness and hope, showing that rebirth is possible even in the face of adversity.
“Alice is a tribute to women who resist in silence, who confront the system and, even wounded, keep moving forward. My goal is to give voice to stories that rarely reach the center of the narrative,” says Isa Colli.
The cover, illustrated by Ryan Casagrande and Yanderson Rodrigues, captures the balance between strength and vulnerability, mirroring the emotional power of the story.
