U.S. government tightens scrutiny on marriage-based green cards, adding interviews, document checks, and higher risk of delays. The Trump administration’s decision to toughen the review of marriage-based green card applications marks a new phase of scrutiny in family immigration processes. The measures, rolled out by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and implemented by the USCIS, include deeper investigations into couples’ lives, tighter document audits, lengthier interviews, and potential reopening of cases over inconsistencies. While the government claims the move aims to curb fraud, experts say it also affects legitimate couples. Immigration attorney Murtaz Navsariwala explains, “This is not a new tendency — it simply formalizes a level of scrutiny already increasing over the past few years.” According to USCIS data, family-based applications remain a major legal path to U.S. permanent residency. However, enhanced investigative tools have added unpredictability. “Marriage to a U.S. citizen doesn’t automatically guarantee a green card. The government evaluates the good faith of the relationship and the consistency of all submitted evidence,” says Murtaz. The tighter control also affects the K-1 fiancé visa. After entering the U.S., couples must marry within 90 days and file for Adjustment of Status. Any mistake could impact immigration history. “Couples with nontraditional arrangements or limited shared finances should expect extra scrutiny. Preparation and documentation are key,” he notes. Murtaz emphasizes that tailored legal strategy now matters more than ever. “Each case has unique factors. Even minor inconsistencies in forms can trigger deeper reviews.
