The HBO-BBC co-production First Day On Earth, from the acclaimed creator of “I May Destroy You,” has revealed four major names for its cast. Thandiwe Newton (“Anaconda,” “God’s Country”) will portray Anya, Maxine Peake (“I Swear, Say Nothing”) plays Helen, Danny Sapani (“Halo,” “Harlots”) takes on Ernest, and Ncuti Gatwa (“Doctor Who,” “Barbie”) brings Darren to life.

The 10-episode series has already begun filming and is written and led by Michaela Coel. The story follows Henri, a British-Ghanaian novelist fleeing her own life after a disturbing incident at her book launch. Upon arriving in Ghana, her ancestral homeland, she immerses herself in a completely new world.

Among new friends, renewed joys and relationships full of nuance, Henri also encounters secrets, lies and denial. This journey leads her to deeply question her identity, history and family bonds.
