Magrão: Brazil’s 2026 World Cup goalkeepers already set

Brazilian legend Magrão believes Ancelotti has his trio locked in: Alisson, Ederson, and Bento are set for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With fewer than 70 days to go before the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Brazilian goalkeeping icon Magrão — ambassador for Betnacional — says coach Carlo Ancelotti already knows exactly who will guard Brazil’s net at the tournament.

A closed roster, in Magrão’s view

“I believe Ancelotti already has his three goalkeepers. The only change that could happen would be due to physical fitness. If everyone is available, I think his list is already set: Alisson, Ederson, and Bento,” Magrão told Betnacional in an exclusive interview.

Magrão turned 49 and remains one of the most respected voices in Brazilian football. With 731 appearances for Sport Recife, he is widely regarded as the club’s greatest ever goalkeeper.

Alisson as the first-choice starter

Of the three, Magrão singles out Alisson Becker as the frontrunner for the No. 1 shirt. “I think Alisson has earned his place as the starter. He has delivered outstanding performances with consistency at both European and international level,” he said.

Named the world’s best goalkeeper in 2019, Alisson missed the recent friendlies against France and Croatia due to a right thigh muscle injury. He is expected to return by the end of April. In his absence, Ederson started against France and Bento played against Croatia.

Penalty shootouts? Magrão nominates himself

When asked who he would pick for a penalty shootout, Magrão delivered his answer with a smile. “If we’re talking strictly about penalty shootouts, I’d take myself — hahaha. Jokes aside, I’d go with Alisson, but I have no doubt that Ederson, Bento, or whoever is available will be fully prepared for that moment,” he said.

Ancelotti keeps his cards close

At his last press conference during the FIFA international window, Carlo Ancelotti said that the goalkeeper selection for the World Cup is taking shape, but declined to name his favorites. With Alisson unavailable, Hugo Souza of Corinthians was called up for the recent friendlies.
