From sensory play areas in malls to a brand-new multisensory suite in a countryside hotel, Rio de Janeiro takes concrete steps for autism inclusion this April.
Throughout April, several venues across the state of Rio de Janeiro are rolling out programming tied to World Autism Awareness Day (April 2) and the broader Blue April campaign. Shopping malls and a family resort are offering sensory experiences, educational workshops, and adapted leisure spaces — all aimed at fostering a more inclusive society for people on the Autism Spectrum (ASD).
Shopping Metropolitano Barra: workshops, talks, and inclusive gaming
Shopping Metropolitano Barra, in the Barra Olímpica district of Rio’s Southwest Zone, is hosting a free three-day program from April 9 to 11, in partnership with Instituto Integra Brasil. Events take place at Espaço MET on the 2nd floor, from 2 PM to 8 PM, and are open to families, educators, and anyone looking to deepen their understanding of ASD.
Activities include sensory-play workshops, music therapy, storytelling, drawing sessions, and psychomotricity exercises — all designed to encourage interaction and creativity in a welcoming setting.
Each evening from 7 PM to 8 PM, roundtable discussions tackle key topics for caregivers: “Meltdown or tantrum? How to respond without making it worse” (04/09), “The role of routine and predictability” (04/10), and “Support networks: who takes care of the caregiver?” (04/11).
Game Station invests R$250,000 in neurodivergent-friendly experiences
Also inside Shopping Metropolitano Barra, the indoor gaming park Game Station is launching an inclusion initiative with a R$250,000 investment in adapted infrastructure and staff training. The program runs during Autism Awareness Week, April 2–6, across all 65+ locations nationwide.
Key measures include noise-canceling headphones for children with auditory hypersensitivity and environment adjustments for greater safety and comfort. Children with an ASD diagnosis will receive free game credits, and registered families earn a R$50 bonus. The initiative aims to reach around 5,000 autistic children across Brazil. Sign-ups are required at www.clubegamestation.com.br — spots are limited.
West Shopping: free activities for ASD families in Campo Grande
West Shopping, in the Campo Grande neighborhood of Rio’s West Zone, is partnering with Clínica Ressignificar (@terapias_ressignificar) for a free afternoon of activities on April 18. The program takes place on the 1st floor near Clube Melissa and is aimed at parents and children with ASD.
Two sessions are scheduled — 2–3 PM and 3:30–4:30 PM — featuring psychologist-led roundtables (up to 20 adults per group) and supervised children’s recreation (up to 12 kids per group). Children must present a medical diagnosis to participate. Registration opens April 8 at noon via the West Shopping app (iOS and Android).
Hotel Fazenda Vilarejo opens a multisensory room in the countryside
In the town of Conservatória, in Rio’s South Fluminense region, Hotel Fazenda Vilarejo is unveiling a multisensory room designed to welcome children with sensory processing differences and other neurodivergences, including ASD. The all-inclusive family resort is expanding its facilities to offer greater comfort, safety, and predictability for young guests.
Designed by interior designer Mari Tavares, the space features a ball pit, cocoon swings, hanging swings, low-profile bean bags, and an open floor plan that eases sensory transitions. The room will be integrated into the existing children’s area, Toca do Lilico.
The hotel already maintains year-round inclusion practices: differentiated ID wristbands, dedicated reservation forms for neurodiverse families, and a trained team ready to support atypical children and their caregivers.
Inclusion is not a month-long campaign. It is a daily commitment — and these initiatives show that Rio’s entertainment and hospitality sectors are moving in the right direction.
