Rio’s hotel association met at Sheraton Grand Rio to address cybersecurity threats, new Gol international routes from Galeão, and solar energy solutions.
Galeão poised to become an intercontinental hub
HotéisRIO, Rio de Janeiro’s hotel industry association, held its monthly board meeting on Tuesday, March 17, at the Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort. Directors and general managers from the city’s leading hotels gathered under the leadership of president Alfredo Lopes.
Lopes opened the meeting by highlighting Gol Airlines‘ recent announcement of new flights connecting Galeão International Airport to New York, Lisbon, Paris, and Orlando. The move positions Rio de Janeiro as a strategic hub for intercontinental travel and signals significant growth potential for the city’s tourism ecosystem.
The expansion of flight options makes us very optimistic and represents growth for Rio’s entire hospitality sector — hotels, restaurants, transportation companies, and shopping centers. Alfredo Lopes, president of HotéisRIO
Lopes also highlighted a successful press trip organized by HotéisRIO in partnership with Gol, which brought 10 journalists from Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina to Rio last weekend.
Cybercrime: a growing threat to hospitality
Cybercrime took center stage as one of the meeting’s most pressing topics. In addition to Lopes, ABIH-RJ president José Domingo Bouzon and legal advisor Paulo Henrique Bergqvist discussed the preventive measures that hotels are reinforcing across their operations to protect both guests and business data.
Hotel industry bodies are also working on communication campaigns to raise awareness among businesses in the sector and draw the attention of relevant authorities to the digital risks facing consumer-facing industries.
Solar energy and public safety round out the agenda
Representatives from Genial Solar — the energy arm of Genial, a company that entered the financial market in 2010 and now operates across multiple sectors — presented the benefits of distributed solar energy generation. The company offers solar energy on a subscription model in Rio de Janeiro, enabling cost savings on electricity bills for both businesses and residences.
The meeting also included updates on public safety in Rio and legislative proposals that could affect hotel operations across the city.
