Known for its sailing tradition, the coastal city of Itajaí, in Santa Catarina state, is now making its mark in sport fishing. The 1st Lobo do Mar Fishing Cup, organized by Marina Itajaí, runs from March 30 to June 21, 2026, bringing together up to 50 anglers from across the region and beyond.

The competition is open to marina members and includes 20 spots for external participants. Registration fees range from R$ 150 to R$ 350, and sign-ups are available at: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfZgB7-zbjriLTseyauW_hpq54kE_LJpNEMbtedkq9yAUJjgg/viewform

Three categories on the line

Competitors will vie in three categories: longest fish, heaviest fish, and largest snook. Every catch must be officially registered in compliance with current environmental regulations, ensuring the event upholds sustainable fishing standards.

R$ 7,000 prize pool and live draws

The awards ceremony takes place on July 3, 2026, during the Marina Itajaí Boat Show. First place takes home R$ 1,000 and a trophy; second place earns R$ 500 in prizes. An additional R$ 500 will be raffled exclusively among participants present at the event. The total prize pool reaches R$ 7,000.

Sport fishing: a R$ 3 billion industry in Brazil

Sport fishing generates around R$ 3 billion annually in Brazil, according to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture. The new championship positions Itajaí as a structured and competitive destination within this growing market.

“Itajaí is already nationally recognized for sailing and for hosting the largest regatta circuit in southern Brazil, as well as major events like the Boat Show. Sport fishing already happens informally in our region — it was time to give it a proper stage.” — Carlos Gayoso de Oliveira, director of Marina Itajaí

According to Oliveira, the event was designed with technical criteria and full compliance with environmental legislation, aiming to set a new standard for nautical competition in the region.
