Itu, birthplace of the Republic, inspires a unique attraction
On Saturday, 15 November, Brazil celebrates 136 years of the Proclamation of the Republic. Although the official event took place in Rio de Janeiro, the foundations of the movement were laid in Itu, in the state of São Paulo, known as the Birthplace of the Republic. In 1873, the city hosted the First Republican Convention, which created the Republican Party and sparked the ideas that would lead to political change in 1889.
One of the key figures was Prudente de Morais, a native of Itu who later became Brazil’s first civilian president. This legacy can be relived aboard the Republic Train, operated by Serra Verde Express.
The only tourist train in Brazil dedicated to the Republic
Connecting Itu and Salto, the Republic Train is the only tourist railway in Brazil themed around the Proclamation. The one-hour journey blends history, culture and entertainment through artistic interventions, live music and period characters recreating the atmosphere of the late nineteenth century.

According to Lilian Sanches, manager of the Republic Train, interaction is at the heart of the attraction. “Each carriage has a special element, with characters who engage visitors and transform the trip into a true historical immersion,” she says.
Historical landscapes and restored stations
The journey follows a century-old railway along the Tietê River, crossing bridges and historical tunnels. Departures take place at the restored stations of Itu and Salto, whose original architecture remains preserved.
