Thailand enchants Brazilians at the 2025 Lantern Festival

Brazil ranks 3rd among foreign visitors at Thailand’s Lantern Festival, a spiritual and emotional experience in Chiang Mai.

Each year, Thailand’s sky becomes a glowing spectacle during the Lantern Festival, celebrated at the full moon of the 12th lunar month. In 2025, Brazil ranked as the third largest foreign audience, with around 5,000 visitors among the 17,000 participants, according to Capital Marketing, Thailand’s official tourism representative in Brazil.

Brazilians captivated by the festival

The event’s popularity among Brazilians has grown so much that it now includes an official Portuguese translator. This year, 43 travelers joined through the agency Se Tu For, Eu Vou – Viagens. “Each year demand increases. Everyone who goes returns amazed and tells friends, and the next group doubles in size,” says Carolina Taketomi, co-founder of the agency.

Beauty and spirituality in Chiang Mai

The Chiang Mai CAD Festival, organized by Chiang Mai Arts & Design, is the most popular among foreigners. Surrounded by nature, it features Buddhist rituals, cultural performances, Thai cuisine and the breathtaking moment when lanterns rise into the sky. “Tickets are limited and sell out fast, but our expeditions guarantee privileged access, private transfers and full support,” explains Carolina.

The highlight comes at night, when the sky and river glow with golden light. “It’s impossible not to be moved. There’s a moment of silence, then smiles, hugs and tears. The message is about letting go of the past and welcoming the new,” she adds.

Many travelers use the occasion to celebrate love and fulfill dreams. “We’ve had marriage proposals, vow renewals and countless tears of joy. It’s the kind of trip that changes something inside you,” she says.

She also notes that Disney’s Tangled movie helped spark interest in the festival. Travelers enjoy full Portuguese-language support, including simultaneous translation and dedicated trip leaders throughout the journey.

Origin and symbolism

The tradition dates back to the ancient Lanna people of northern Thailand, who launched paper lanterns into the sky to send prayers to Buddha. Over time, the act of devotion evolved into a spectacular visual celebration that continues to light up temples and homes across the country, preserving its deep spiritual essence.
