“Quilombolas: Em Terras de Jacintha” by Radilson Carlos Gomes da Silva opens December 4 at Mercado Público Gallery in Florianópolis.
The photo exhibition “Quilombolas: Em Terras de Jacintha” gives visibility to the faces and voices of the Quilombo Vidal Martins community, the only quilombola settlement in Florianópolis. The show opens on December 4 at 5 p.m. at the Cultural Gallery of the Public Market, in the city’s Historic Center.
Featuring 22 analog photographs created using the Lambe Lambe technique, the show is the result of five months of work by photographer and curator Radilson Carlos Gomes da Silva. The exhibition highlights the memories, struggles, and cultural strength of the Afro-Brazilian families who keep their traditions alive in the region.
Dialogue between past and present
The vintage Lambe Lambe camera, dating back over a century, serves as both a creative tool and a metaphor for resistance. Alongside it, Radilson uses a smartphone to record the voices of the community, merging analog and digital languages to preserve identity and history. The combination results in a poetic reflection on memory and belonging.
“Art has the power to transform. I hope visitors can feel the strength and dignity of the Rio Vermelho quilombola community and reflect on their ongoing struggle for land, culture, and identity,” says Radilson.
The artist and his path
Known for his humanistic approach, Radilson previously developed projects focused on social and cultural narratives such as “Floripa em 3×4,” “Yvyrupa Território,” and “Haiti Bombagai.” He recently exhibited his work at “Brazil: Indigenous Land,” featured during COP30 in Belém.
