“Em Cenas” is Nicolas Krassik’s new project blending an album and an audiovisual show. Digital release on January 14, featuring leading forró musicians.
French violinist Nicolas Krassik presents “Em Cenas”, an original project that pairs a brand-new album with a filmed performance. The record lands on digital platforms on January 14, the same day the video premieres on the artist’s YouTube channel. A vinyl edition will follow.
Captured live by production company VMD, the show is designed as an immersive encounter. The camera and sound place the audience at the heart of the musicians’ circle, close to every note, chord, and improvisation. With a polished cinematic look and detailed audio, the project invites a sensory kind of listening that resonates physically and emotionally.
Instrumental forró: roots and freedom
On “Em Cenas”, Northeastern Brazilian music takes center stage through an instrumental approach that balances tradition with creative freedom. Krassik is joined by Pablo Moura (accordion), Lau Trajano (bass), Guegué Medeiros (zabumba), and Kabé Pinheiros (percussion). The performance highlights the band’s tight chemistry, with swing, bold improvisation, and arrangements that foreground the conversation between instruments.
The project also features a special guest appearance by Luciana Romanholi (guitar), expanding the palette and reinforcing the bridge between Brazilian rhythms and a jazz-informed vocabulary.
Original repertoire with tributes
The repertoire on “Em Cenas” is mostly original, while also offering heartfelt tributes to Gilberto Gil and Dominguinhos—two key influences on Krassik’s musical path. The album reads as a love letter to Brazil’s popular culture, connecting the violin’s lyricism to the warmth of Northeastern grooves, while keeping improvisation at the core.
About Nicolas Krassik
Born on the outskirts of Paris in 1969, Nicolas Krassik trained in classical music and built a strong career in European jazz alongside icons such as Michel Petrucciani and Didier Lockwood. In 2001, he arrived in Brazil driven by a deep fascination with the country’s rhythms, and soon expanded his work across genres—from choro and samba to MPB and forró.
Over the years, he has collaborated with major Brazilian artists including Hamilton de Holanda, Yamandu Costa, Carlos Malta, Gilberto Gil, João Bosco, Beth Carvalho, Marisa Monte, Lenine, and Chico Buarque. His relationship with forró stands out, with more than two decades devoted to the style, appearing at festivals and well-known dance halls such as Canto da Ema (São Paulo), Rootstock (Belo Horizonte), and the Forró de Itaúnas festival (Espírito Santo).
Alongside Gilberto Gil, he spent four years touring projects such as “Fé na festa”, which brought forró to audiences worldwide, and “Concerto de cordas e máquinas de ritmos”. Since moving to Brazil, Krassik has played across the country and at internationally recognized venues, including Carnegie Hall (New York), Music Box (Lisbon), Tom Jazz (São Paulo), Circo Voador and Fundição Progresso (Rio de Janeiro), as well as festivals and SESC theaters.
He also gained attention with his group Cordestinos, blending Brazil’s Northeast with jazz through strings and percussion. The composition “Cordestinos”, which gave the group its name, ranks among his most-played tracks on streaming platforms and remains a staple at forró dances in Brazil and abroad.
His discography includes “Na Lapa” (2004), “Caçuá” (2006), “Nicolas Krassik e Cordestinos” (2008), “Odilê, odilá” (2009), “Nordeste de Paris” (2017), “Mestrinho e Nicolas Krassik” (2016), and “Estrela” (2021). As he approaches 25 years based in Brazil, he continues to strengthen his role as a leading voice for the violin in Brazilian music.
