Portuguese folk dances and fado take over São Roque Castle on March 29, with proceeds supporting the Provedoria’s care for vulnerable Portuguese seniors.
São Roque Castle hosts “From Folklore to Fado – A meeting of cultures, sounds and stories,” a celebration of Portuguese-Brazilian identity that blends performance, food traditions, and a strong charitable mission. The program is designed as an immersive, feel-good experience that connects audiences with living Portuguese heritage.
Portuguese folklore takes the spotlight
At the heart of the event are traditional Portuguese dances performed by Lusitanian communities that keep these customs alive across generations. Music, costumes, and choreography come together on stage as a vivid expression of cultural identity, inviting Brazilian audiences into a direct, joyful exchange.
Fado and food as cultural heritage
The afternoon also features a special fado performance, from the genre recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Another highlight is a storytelling moment about “arroz malandrinho,” a beloved Portuguese rice dish, presented with support from Cais do Porto.
Teresinha, the restaurant’s owner, will lead the segment on the dish’s history. She is also the president of the Provedoria of the Portuguese Community of São Paulo.
A benefit for the Provedoria
Beyond culture, “From Folklore to Fado” is a benefit event: all proceeds will go to the Provedoria of the Portuguese Community of São Paulo, which provides support for vulnerable Portuguese elderly people. The setting adds an extra layer of meaning—São Roque Castle was created from the family story of its founder, Eduardo Pereira, whose grandfather was Portuguese.
Today, the family continues that connection and uses cultural and social initiatives to link past, present, and future.
“Holding this event at the Castle has a deep meaning. It comes from our story, from the Portuguese heritage we want to preserve and share. Promoting Portuguese culture in support of the Provedoria is a concrete way to honor our roots,” says Eduardo Pereira, the event organizer.
