Seven years between albums
Luciano Nakata Albuquerque, Curumin’s real name, is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He started his career as a drummer and has collaborated with names like Arnaldo Antunes, Céu, and Vanessa da Mata, besides being part of projects such as Sindicato do Groove, Toca, and Zomba.Between Boca (2017) and Pedra de Selva (2024), the seven-year gap was marked by pandemic challenges. The new work consolidates his musical evolution over two decades and five albums: Perro (2005), Achados e Perdidos (2005), Japan Pop Show (2008), and Arrocha (2012).Nature, technology, and ancestry
Across 17 tracks, Pedra de Selva explores the connections between nature and technology. This foundation is deepened by the visions of Ailton Krenak and Salloma Salomão, whose perspectives are central pillars of the work’s guiding philosophy. The album features contributions from Nellê, Josy.Anne, François Muleka, Funk Buia, Ava Rocha, Jéssica Caitano, Iara Rennó, Lívia Nery, Rimon Guimarães, and Anelis Assumpção, the artist’s life partner. Together with her, Curumin co-wrote the track “Meu Benni”, composed for their son.The narrative transforms everyday life into raw material: from family bonds and technological dilemmas to the constant search for humanity. True to his sonic identity, the album bridges rhythmic ancestry and urban modernity, fusing electronic beats with WhatsApp audio messages.I think we need to return to an initial idea of what art is, what music is – what you choose to see in it. Within artistic expression, for me, what matters is authenticity.
Mirror of contemporary anxiety
The contrast between organic and synthetic that permeates Pedra de Selva is not merely aesthetic, but a mirror of contemporary anxiety. Curumin uses his work to process pessimism in the face of a system that prioritizes profit over life. The feeling is that we’re accelerating toward something close to the end of the world. The machine doesn’t stop, it only accelerates, blinded by power. Technology, consumption, extraction, destruction… all of this is fuel for the fire. I don’t see much hope. What remains for me is a personal utopia: trying to build my reality in a different way.
