MaPa FOTO Gallery opens April 10 a rare exhibition featuring 11 Brazilian photographers who shot on the legendary Kodachrome film.
The exhibition KODACHROME brings together works by Andreas Heiniger, Bob Wolfenson, Eduardo Muylaert, João Farkas, Klaus Mitteldorf, Nellie Solitrenick, Paulo Fridman, Paulo Vainer, Paulo Vitale, Roberto Linsker, and Tuca Reinés. The images were created between the 1980s and the early 2000s, a period when Kodachrome established itself as the gold standard of photographic quality.
A film that demanded full commitment
Celebrated for its rich, vibrant color palette, Kodachrome operated on entirely different terms than digital photography. There was no instant review, no post-processing fix. Every shutter click was final.
The development process made the experience even more singular. For decades, rolls shot in Brazil had to be shipped to laboratories in Panama or the United States. That journey gave the images a distinct sense of time and an almost impossible-to-replicate rarity.
Diverse geographies, unified aesthetic
The works travel across different territories: from a Greek summer to the streets of Salvador, from improvised studios in New York to Brazilian urban and natural landscapes. The diversity of perspectives coexists with the film’s signature aesthetic — its fine grain, striking contrast, and a durability that defies time.
Even after production ceased in 2009, the images retain a chromatic intensity that remains surprisingly vivid.
Single editions and certificates of authenticity
Each work will be available as a unique print, in the format of 1.20 x 80 cm. The original slide accompanies each print as a certificate of authenticity, signed by the photographer — a curatorial choice that reinforces the rarity already embedded in the medium itself.
More than a historical review, KODACHROME invites the public to reflect on the time of photography and the transformations in how images are produced and consumed — from the materiality of analog to the immediacy of digital.
