With 83 images from the Festival de Curitiba archive, “Between Gazes” celebrates at PUCPR Cultural Center the encounters created through theater.
Between Gazes: Visual Narratives of the Festival de Curitiba has been open since March 26 and runs through May 23, with free admission for all audiences. Presented by PUCPR Cultura, the exhibition brings together works by 11 photographers and offers a broader view of theatrical creation.
Across the exhibition, visitors will see 83 photographs from the Festival de Curitiba archive. The images focus on stages, backstage spaces and audiences, showing how theater is also shaped by encounters among artists, crews, photographers and the public.
Between Gazes and Festival de Curitiba
Curated by Annelize Tozetto, with exhibition design by Gustavo Paris and sponsorship by Chamex, the show is built on two key traits of theater photography. On one side is the ephemeral nature of performance, since each presentation is unique. On the other is the multiplicity of perspectives, which can turn the same moment into very different images.
“The exhibition brings backstage encounters to the public, as well as meetings among artists and between artists and audiences, while also exploring the encounter between the photographer and the scene, presenting sequences that culminate in deeply symbolic records,” says Annelize Tozetto, curator of the exhibition.
The photographs were produced between 2022 and 2025. This time frame begins with the in-person return of Festival de Curitiba after the Covid-19 pandemic and highlights the power of reunion in the performing arts experience.
More than simple documentation, the exhibition reveals bonds, atmospheres and moments that stay in memory. In this way, it expands the view of theater and underscores its collective nature, far beyond what happens on stage.
“For us, it is an honor to present such beautiful stories and works at the PUCPR Cultural Center, in a year when we celebrate the power of encounters fostered by art and culture,” says Douglas Moreira, manager of PUCPR Cultura.
