For Waltercio Caldas, time is a working material — not a backdrop, but the very substance of his art. That idea drives o (tempo) [the (time)], a major retrospective opening on May 14, 2026, at 6 p.m. at Casa Roberto Marinho in Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition brings together approximately 100 works made between 1967 and 2025, mapping six decades of one of the most rigorous careers in Brazilian contemporary art.
The title sets the tone from the start. Placing the word “time” inside parentheses is no accident. “The parentheses suggest something…”, says the artist. “They suspend time as measure and present it as a material of language and thought.”
An exhibition designed as a work of art
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1946, Waltercio Caldas designed the show himself — and that choice is meaningful. For him, an exhibition is not a container for finished objects; it is another stage of the work’s realization. The arrangement of pieces, the distances between them and the path the visitor walks all form part of the artistic process.
“Making an exhibition is still a prerogative of the work itself,” he explains. “When we deal with sculptures and objects, space becomes the material, and the show turns radically physical.” The venue, located in the Cosme Velho neighborhood in the South Zone of Rio, hosts sculptures, paintings, drawings, books and immersive environments throughout its rooms.
Blue Room opens the journey
Quarto Azul (Blue Room, 2007) greets visitors in the first gallery. The environment wraps the viewer in a field of color crossed by lines that subtly shift the perception of space. From that entry point, works from across Caldas’s career begin to speak to one another in new configurations, generating continuous shifts in the viewer’s gaze.
