Rio’s MIS Copacabana Opens — and the Museum Is the Exhibit

After years of anticipation, Rio de Janeiro’s new Museum of Image and Sound opens May 8 with a show about how the building itself came to be.

The MIS Copacabana, located at Avenida Atlântica 3432 — one of the most iconic seafront addresses in Brazil — finally opens its doors to the public this Friday. But instead of launching with a traditional art exhibition, the museum turns the spotlight on itself: the inaugural show, “Arquitetura em Cena” (Architecture in the Spotlight), takes visitors behind the scenes of the building’s own creation.

The project is a collaboration between the Rio de Janeiro State Government — through the Secretariats of Culture, Civil House, and Public Infrastructure — and the Roberto Marinho Foundation. Conceived as a “vertical boulevard”, the building was designed to guide visitors through Brazilian culture via immersive audiovisual and interactive experiences spread across its floors.

A Museum That Opens With Its Own Story

The opening exhibition is a rare kind of institutional transparency: rather than presenting external artists or movements, it documents the decisions, challenges, and creative process that shaped the building visitors are standing inside. It’s a self-portrait of a cultural landmark in the making.

When fully operational, MIS Copacabana is set to become what its creators call a Memory Factory — a space dedicated to preserving and celebrating contemporary expressions of Rio’s identity, from funk and samba to digital culture and the city’s distinctive aesthetic.

This is a deeply symbolic moment for the culture of our state. The new MIS Copacabana is beginning to establish itself as a living space — one that pulses with art, memory, and innovation.

How to Visit

For the opening week — which coincides with Mother’s Day in Brazil — sessions will be held on Friday, May 8 at 2 p.m., and Saturday, May 9 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Free tickets (up to two per person) are available via Sympla starting Wednesday, May 6 at noon.

From the following week onward, visits will take place on Saturdays and Sundays, with weekly ticket batches released every Tuesday at 10 a.m. through the same platform.

What the Full Museum Will Offer

Once completed, the museum will feature short- and long-term exhibition halls, research areas, educational rooms, a cinema-theater, a 280-seat auditorium, a shop, café, panoramic restaurant, nightclub, and a rooftop lookout — a cultural destination that promises to redefine the city’s waterfront.
