A chain of artists revisits resistance in Mulheres Radicais, opening Cine ArtRio and reigniting debates on body, politics, and Latin American art.
History doesn’t stay silent—it resurfaces, challenges, and reshapes the present. That tension drives “Radical Women” (2023), the documentary opening Cine ArtRio on May 12 at 6 PM at the MAM Rio Cinematheque.
Directed by Isabel Nascimento Silva and Isabel De Luca, the film builds on a landmark exhibition that traveled through major institutions like the Hammer Museum and the Brooklyn Museum. Featuring 127 artists from 15 countries, it spotlighted both celebrated and previously overlooked voices.
A networked narrative
Instead of a traditional structure, the documentary unfolds as a chain of encounters. Brazilian artist Lenora de Barros initiates the process, choosing another artist to interview, who then selects the next. The result is an organic web of conversations.
Through these exchanges, 11 artistic trajectories emerge, shaped by exile, dictatorship, and social upheaval. The body becomes more than medium—it turns into a political tool and a site of resistance.
Art as resistance
Blending archival footage with personal materials, the film showcases around 400 artworks discussed by the artists themselves. The range spans performance, video art, dance, and hybrid forms that challenge conventional categories.
Rather than a retrospective, the film reframes these works in today’s context. It highlights how artistic practices born under repression still shape conversations around identity, gender, and freedom.
Cine ArtRio positions itself as a space for reflection, merging cinema and visual arts through curated screenings with material from Curta On.
