International tourism in Rio de Janeiro continues to gain momentum in 2026, with figures that highlight the state’s growing relevance on the global stage. In the first four months of the year alone, more than one million foreign visitors arrived in the state.
A total of 1,065,011 international tourists were recorded between January and April, marking an 18.1% increase compared to the 901,991 arrivals registered in the same period of 2025. The data comes from Embratur in partnership with Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism and Federal Police.
Strong position in national tourism
With this performance, Rio de Janeiro maintains its position as the second most visited destination in Brazil, reinforcing its importance within both the national and international tourism markets.
The sector’s growth continues to drive key areas such as hospitality, retail, services, and cultural activities, while also contributing to income generation across the state.
According to the State Tourism Department, the results reflect consistent international promotion efforts and the wide range of experiences available to visitors.
Diverse attractions fuel growth
Tourism Secretary Lucas Alves highlights the state’s ability to attract visitors year-round as a key factor behind the growth.
The positive performance reinforces Rio de Janeiro’s ability to attract visitors throughout the year, driven by its unique combination of nature, culture, gastronomy, historical heritage, adventure tourism, and major events.
Another notable trend is the growing visibility of destinations beyond the capital, with inland regions gaining traction among international tourists.
This shift is helping distribute tourism revenue more evenly, strengthening local economies across the state’s 12 tourism regions.
Argentina leads inbound markets
Argentina remains the top source of international visitors to Rio de Janeiro. From January to April, 412,447 Argentine tourists visited the state, a 19.16% increase compared to the previous year.
Chile ranks second with 167,178 arrivals, up 16.16%, followed by the United States with 93,818 visitors.
Uruguay and France complete the top five, with 39,379 and 38,465 visitors respectively. France recorded a 14.34% increase.
The data highlights a diversified international demand and points to continued expansion for Rio’s tourism sector throughout 2026.
