GOL Linhas Aéreas has announced a new direct route connecting Porto Alegre (POA) and Foz do Iguaçu (IGU), strengthening travel between two key economic and tourism hubs in southern Brazil. The service begins on July 2 and is expected to streamline access to the Triple Frontier region.
The route will initially operate with two weekly flights until September 17. From that point, service will shift to one weekly flight through November 30. In December, during the peak summer season, the airline will restore two weekly frequencies.
A strategic regional link
This new nonstop connection responds to strong passenger demand and enhances travel between two high-traffic destinations. Foz do Iguaçu is one of Brazil’s most iconic tourist sites, attracting visitors from across South America and beyond.
Porto Alegre, meanwhile, serves as a major gateway to southern Brazil, with access to wine regions, mountain destinations, and coastal attractions. The direct route reduces travel time and simplifies itineraries for both leisure and business travelers.
Strong demand signals growth
In the first quarter of 2026 alone, around 5,9 thousand passengers traveled between the two cities despite the absence of direct flights. That figure represents roughly half the volume recorded in 2023, when nonstop service was available.
Industry expectations point to significant growth with the route’s return. Direct flights are expected to lower fares and encourage shorter trips, particularly weekend travel, benefiting local tourism and regional economies.
Flight operations and schedule
The route will be operated using Boeing 737 aircraft, each with capacity for 186 passengers. Between July 2 and August 2, flights depart Porto Alegre on Mondays and Fridays at 6:00 a.m., arriving in Foz do Iguaçu at 7:15 a.m.
Return flights during this period leave on Thursdays and Sundays at 9:45 p.m., landing at 11:05 p.m. From August 6 to September 17, flights will operate on Thursdays and Saturdays, with departures scheduled in the morning and afternoon.
Between September 18 and November 30, service will be limited to Saturdays. December schedules are still being finalized, with increased capacity expected for the summer travel season.
Network expansion
GOL states that the new route enhances connectivity for travelers across Brazil, opening new possibilities for both tourism and business travel. The launch also reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen regional aviation networks.
Airport operators view the route as a long-awaited addition that meets passenger demand for direct connectivity between the two cities.
