Three friends who have traveled the world since 2014 in search of wine and stories launch an unprecedented book in Brazil. Book signing on March 7 in São Paulo.
Some stories are born on the road, mature one glass at a time, and only make it to the page when a friendship is strong enough to turn them into shared memory. That is exactly what “Caminhos dos Sábios — A história de amigos, lugares e vinhos” (Paths of the Wise — A Story of Friends, Places and Wines) represents: a decade of wine-fueled travels brought to life by Amando Varella, Valter Lima, and Lincoln Romero.
The official launch takes place on March 7, 2025, from 3 PM to 7 PM, at Wood Wine Experience in São Paulo, with a book signing session and a gathering of the authors with readers, friends, and wine lovers.
Friendship first, wine second
The book is not about the history or culture of wine. It is about the friendship between three people who decided to travel the world to learn more about this ancient beverage. Each trip is a story. Each destination sparks distinct conversations — but they always circle back to the most essential thing among the three: friendship.
How “The Wise Ones” got their name
The group’s name was born during one of those trips. On a visit to Vale Dona Maria winery in Portugal, a young tour guide was amazed to discover that the three were married men who traveled the world once a year to drink wine — without their wives.
These guys are absolute legends!
The phrase, spoken by a colleague of the guide, became their trademark. They embraced it, and the name never left them.
A decade of travel from 2014 to 2019
The trio’s annual trips covered six countries, with a strong focus on Portugal, Spain, and Brazil — where the first chapter unfolds in Bento Gonçalves (RS). Readers witness, ten years on, the remarkable evolution of that Brazilian wine region in both quality and eco-tourism.
“The idea of turning our adventures into a book came up in 2017, during the Portugal trip. The project was developed over the following years and completed in 2024, after being paused by the Covid-19 pandemic,” explains author Valter Lima.
Rare wineries — some no longer exist
One of the book’s standout features is the authors’ deliberate choice of destinations: in every country visited, they sought out little-known wineries, many of which no longer exist — some absorbed by larger groups, others destroyed by wildfires. The book preserves the history of these places and the nostalgia of those who knew them at their peak.
Rich visuals and a story for every kind of reader
“Caminhos dos Sábios” can be read cover to cover, used as a reference for specific wines tasted in each country, or simply browsed. From nearly six thousand photographs taken along the way, the finest were carefully selected — all taken by the authors themselves. The book also features caricatures and blends depth with lightness, reflection with humor.
According to Lima, the publisher embraced the project precisely because of its innovative concept: exploring friendship and travel through the lens of wine was something unprecedented in the Brazilian publishing market.
The result is an eclectic, accessible, and rich work — for wine lovers, travelers, readers of friendship narratives, or simply anyone who appreciates a beautifully illustrated book — Valter Lima, author
