This Carnival Saturday (Feb 14), revelers heading to the mega street parties in downtown Rio can get into the festive spirit right at the subway. MetrôRio is promoting the “Glow Station”, offering a booth with biodegradable glitter for passengers to add sparkle to their costumes.
The initiative takes place at Carioca/Centro station, one of the main access points to the Preta Gil Circuit, on February 14 and 15, from 7 AM to 1 PM. The action is part of the operator’s special Carnival scheme, running 24 hours non-stop until midnight on Ash Wednesday (Feb 18).
Educational campaign with carnival rhythm
Beyond the glitter booth, MetrôRio launched the “Come shine 24 hours on the subway” campaign, created by Made agency. The initiative combines safety and coexistence guidelines with Carnival’s festive atmosphere. A special jingle, performed by samba artist Bico Doce, accompanies educational messages at stations, trains, and social media.
Illustrations throughout the system highlight best practices: disposing of trash properly, not urinating on floors, avoiding fights and harassment. They also reinforce safety rules, such as not crossing the yellow line, descending stairs carefully, and never accessing the tracks.
Special Carnival operation
The subway system operates 24 hours from Saturday (Feb 14) until midnight on Wednesday (Feb 18). Line 2 runs between Pavuna and General Osório/Ipanema, with transfers to Line 1 available between Central do Brasil/Centro and General Osório/Ipanema stations.
For those heading to the Sambadrome or Terreirão do Samba, Central do Brasil/Centro and Praça Onze stations operate 24 hours. Revelers attending street parties at Aterro do Flamengo should use Glória station, which features special flow control infrastructure and reinforced staff.
The operator recommends using contactless payment or recharging cards in advance to avoid lines. The MetrôRio app (available for Android and iOS) allows real-time operation tracking.
