At the Berlin Film Festival, Lázaro Ramos announced his fourth film as director: a road movie about friendship, poetry, and Brazil’s cultural soul.
Brazilian actor and filmmaker Lázaro Ramos unveiled his next project, “Mais Que Irmãos” (More Than Brothers), at the Berlinale, one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals. The announcement was first reported by Variety, and confirms Ramos’s return to the director’s chair — while also starring in the film.
A Journey Through Brazil’s Northeast
The film is a road movie written by Sérgio Machado, the acclaimed screenwriter behind “Madame Satã” and “Cidade Baixa.” The story follows the friendship between a singer and a poet at a turning point in their lives and careers. Together, they set out on a journey that becomes a poetic, musical, and existential exploration of Brazil’s deep cultural roots.
Their shared goal is to create a work that goes beyond biography — a sensitive manifesto about Brazil’s Northeast, where folk culture and poetry coexist as forms of resistance and beauty.
Reuniting with ELO Studios
“Mais Que Irmãos” also marks a creative reunion between Ramos and ELO STUDIOS, the production company behind the film — and the same studio that distributed “Medida Provisória,” which became the most-watched Brazilian film in the country during its release year.
I am very happy to direct my fourth film and reaffirm my partnership with ELO. Especially because it resonates with this moment when Brazilian cinema celebrates its identity and language by telling a story set on our own territory.
Sabrina Nudeliman Wagon, CEO of ELO STUDIOS, also expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration.
We worked with Lázaro in 2022 and we are thrilled to produce this very special project. Lázaro brings an undeniable truth to his work, and being able to follow this development closely is an honor. Mais Que Irmãos will show a Brazil that many people don’t know, but that is the cultural foundation of our country.
A Director’s Voice Coming Into Its Own
With “Mais Que Irmãos,” Ramos reaches his fourth feature as director, following “Medida Provisória,” “Um Ano Inesquecível – Outono,” and the documentary “Bando, Um Filme De:.” His trajectory signals a consistent, author-driven commitment to authentic Brazilian storytelling and the country’s rich cultural diversity.
