After a two-year absence, the world’s biggest open-air cinema turns Rio’s Jockey Club into an unmissable film festival, March 25–April 11.
Open Air Brasil is back in Rio de Janeiro, and it’s bringing one of the most ambitious outdoor cinema lineups the city has ever seen. Presented by Brazil’s Ministry of Culture and Nubank, the festival takes over the iconic Jockey Club Brasileiro from March 25 to April 11, screening films on a 325-square-meter screen — roughly the size of a tennis court — the largest open-air cinema screen in the world.
Seven Oscar Nominees Under the Stars
The lineup features seven Oscar-nominated films: “The Secret Agent” by Kleber Mendonça Filho; “Sinners”, Ryan Coogler’s record-breaking film with 16 Academy Award nominations — the most in Oscar history; “Hamnet” by Chloé Zhao; “Zootopia 2”; “Marty Supreme” starring Timothée Chalamet; “Avatar: Fire and Ash”; and “One Battle After Another”, Paul Thomas Anderson’s 13-nomination drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Free Opening Night and a Brazilian Premiere
The opening night on Wednesday, March 25, will feature free tickets distributed through the Sympla platform — release details will be announced on the event’s social media channels. The evening centers on the world premiere of “Pequenas Criaturas” (“Little Creatures”), directed by Anne Pinheiro Guimarães, with director and stars Carolina Dieckmann and Caco Ciocler in attendance. The film, grand winner of the 2025 Rio Film Festival, follows a woman abandoned in Brasília in 1986 with her two young children. The short film “O Pai da Rainha de Angola” by Rodrigo França opens the night, exploring solo fatherhood and Afro-Brazilian ancestry.
Kill Bill Uncut and Timeless Classics
One of the most anticipated screenings of the season is “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” on April 1. Quentin Tarantino’s director’s cut merges both volumes of his revenge saga into a single approximately 4.5-hour experience, complete with eight previously unseen minutes, an anime sequence by Production I.G — the studio behind Ghost in the Shell — and a 15-minute intermission. Other beloved titles in the lineup include “Thelma & Louise” (April 8) and “Superbad” (March 29).
Family Films, Gothic Horror, and Wicked
There’s something for every audience. Younger viewers will enjoy “Zootopia 2” (April 3), “DPA 4” (April 4), and “The SpongeBob Movie” (April 11). Fantasy fans can look forward to “Wicked — Part 2” (April 5) and the gothic thriller “The Bride!” by Maggie Gyllenhaal, starring Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz (April 2). The festival closes on April 11 with the surf documentary “Maya and the Wave”, celebrating Brazilian big-wave surfer Maya Gabeira, followed by a live music set from Matinê do Quartinho.
Live Music and Food Round Out the Experience
Concerts are included in the last-session ticket each day. Confirmed acts include Olinda’s brass band Academia da Berlinda (March 26), jazz ensemble Ney Conceição Quinteto (March 27), singer CATTO (April 2), and Rio rapper 2ZDinizz (March 29). Food vendors and gastronomy attractions round out the immersive experience at the Jockey Club grounds.
How to Get Tickets
Tickets are sold per session and include popcorn. Sales open on Tuesday, March 3, for Nubank customers and on Thursday, March 5, for the general public via Sympla.
