Rare French and German films (1970–80) headline a Rio showcase exploring dissident bodies, desire, and resistance in the post-68 era.
Outsider bodies, unruly desires, and cinema made outside the system define Revolting Bodies: The Underground in France and Germany (1970s–1980s). The program, organized by the Goethe-Institut Rio de Janeiro and the French Consulate as part of the Juntes na Cultura initiative, takes place February 25–28 at Estação NET Rio, curated by Pedro Henrique Ferreira.
The selection brings together eight films from France and Germany produced between the 1970s and 1980s — a vivid reflection of post-1968 counterculture. These underground works challenge dominant ideas of gender, sexuality, and power while crafting new visual languages of resistance.
Post-68 exhaustion in La maman et la putain
Highlights include Jean Eustache’s La maman et la putain (1973), a raw portrait of emotional fatigue and disillusionment. Marie-Claude Treilhou’s Simone Barbès ou la vertu (1980) and Paul Vecchiali’s Corps à cœur (1979) explore female subjectivity and resistance within patriarchal spaces.
Dissidence, exile, and trauma
From Germany, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s In einem Jahr mit 13 Monden (1978) examines trans identity and social marginalization. Ulrike Ottinger’s Freak Orlando (1981) and Frank Ripploh’s Taxi zum Klo (1980) explore queer aesthetics, humor, and desire. Thomas Harlan’s Wundkanal (1984) confronts Germany’s Nazi legacy in a disturbing mix of fiction and memory.
Raul Ruiz’s La ville des pirates (1983) adds a surreal meditation on exile and identity. Together, the films create a dialogue between the radicalism of the 1970s and contemporary debates around dissident bodies and political memory.
“These films show that desire and the body can be acts of political resistance,” says curator Pedro Henrique Ferreira.
