Dudu Gehlen’s acclaimed monologue returns to Teatro Cândido Mendes in March for a farewell season featuring interpretation in Libras.
After touring Rio’s favelas and festivals across Brazil, “Cadeira de Balanço” comes back to Rio de Janeiro for its final four performances at Teatro Cândido Mendes, in Ipanema. The shows take place on Sundays, from March 8 to 29, at 6 p.m.
Based on the memories of his great-grandmother, Dona Caçula, Dudu Gehlen turns family stories into a moving piece of autofiction. The play follows a grandson recalling his grandmother’s life during her wake, blending humor, tenderness, and reflection on memory, time, and loss. It’s a poetic tribute to ancestry and resilience.
“Cadeira de Balanço was born from the desire to eternalize my great-grandmother’s memories and the territory of Cantanhede, Maranhão,” says Dudu Gehlen.
Directed by Jefferson Santi, the award-winning play is part of the Fluxos Fluminenses Program (SECEC/RJ). All sessions include Libras interpretation, reinforcing accessibility and audience inclusion.
Tickets range from R$15 (half) to R$30 (full) and are available at https://bileto.sympla.com.br/event/95316. Duration: 50 minutes. Age rating: 14+.
