Cólica Renal releases songs after cover veto

After a publisher reversed its clearance, Brazil’s top Mamonas Assassinas tribute band drops four original tracks and announces a “30 Years of Nostalgia” tour.

A release despite the setback

Banda Cólica Renal, Brazil’s longest-running tribute to the Mamonas Assassinas, released four new songs on streaming platforms yesterday. The original project — titled GC Session — had planned ten tracks, including six cover recordings of the iconic group’s catalog. After all formal steps were completed, including payment and a signed authorization, the rights-holding publisher reversed its decision once it identified Cólica Renal as the performing act, offering no detailed explanation.

Studio sessions had already begun when the reversal came. Facing the unexpected obstacle, the band chose to suspend the six covers and move forward exclusively with its original compositions.

Over two decades on the road

Although officially founded in 2011, the band’s roots go back to 1998, when frontman and founder Paulinho first began performing the Mamonas repertoire live. Since then, Cólica Renal has played festivals, concerts, and cultural events across Brazil, keeping alive the irreverent energy that defined Brazilian pop culture in the 1990s.

“30 Years of Nostalgia” tour

Looking ahead, the group is now focused on live performance. The “30 Anos de Saudade” (30 Years of Nostalgia) tour celebrates three decades since the Mamonas Assassinas phenomenon took Brazilian music by storm. The show features classic songs, themed costumes, and a family-friendly format designed to bridge generations around a shared musical memory.

Despite the recent setback, Banda Cólica Renal reaffirms its commitment to operating within legal boundaries while continuing to honor the legacy that has driven the project for over 25 years.
