Based on Dickens’ 1850 novel, a new São Paulo production follows an orphan’s journey through Victorian society, running weekends through March 29. Dagnus Produções has opened “David Copperfield – A Story of Growth, Loss and Discovery” at Teatro Paiol Cultural, in the Vila Buarque neighborhood of São Paulo. The run began on March 7 and continues through March 29, with performances on Saturdays and Sundays between 5 PM and 8 PM.
A Victorian classic on a Brazilian stage
Directed by Allan Oliveira, the production adapts Charles Dickens‘ beloved novel, originally published in 1850. The story follows a fatherless orphan who grows up navigating loss, injustice, and hardship that shape his character from an early age. Raised at first by his mother and nanny, his childhood is shattered by the arrival of cruel, authoritarian figures who plunge him into a world of suffering and repression. As David moves through different stages of life, he encounters a cast of unforgettable characters — some who wound him, others who offer shelter — learning, often the hard way, to tell affection from manipulation, friendship from oppression, and dreams from reality. Amid exhausting labor and painful revelations, he forges his own identity against the contradictions of Victorian society.
