“The Little Grain of Sand” by João Falcão opens April 18 at Teatro Sesi-SP with free admission and shows for audiences of all ages on Av. Paulista.
A grain of sand falls in love with a star and decides to chase that dream, even when everything around insists it’s impossible. With that poetic premise, João Falcão brings a brand-new staging of “O Pequenino Grão de Areia” (The Little Grain of Sand) to the Teatro Sesi-SP — a musical he wrote, composed, and directs himself. The premiere is set for April 18, with free entry and sessions open to all ages.
A fable from 1983 that still resonates
The text was originally created in 1983, built around a simple but powerful metaphor: a seemingly insignificant grain of sand that is, in fact, essential to the construction of the world. Decades later, the piece’s poetic narrative continues to speak across generations.
On stage, versatile performers shift between narration, characters, and songs, driving the story in a direct, emotional, and imaginative way. The casting reflects one of Falcão’s core artistic beliefs: the actor as the fundamental material of the staging, moving fluidly between words, music, physicality, and poetry.
Music as dramatic action
In this production, songs function as narrative chapters. They don’t interrupt the story — they are the story. Each musical moment expands meaning, guides transitions, and deepens the audience’s emotional engagement, reinforcing that music is dramatic action in this work.
Synopsis
Among many grains of sand — each with its own personality, from the laugher and the crybaby to the know-it-all, the bossy one, and the fearful one — emerges a tender portrait of human diversity from childhood. One dreamer grain falls for a star and sets out to reach it. Along the way, it confronts the limits of logic, easy promises, and expectations. It is nature itself, with its own time and wisdom, that brings the poetic conclusion to this journey.
Making theater for all audiences, especially for children, is wonderful because kids arrive at the theater free of prejudice and full of what theater audiences should have: imagination. For a child, everything is possible. It will be very special to see my granddaughters watching something I created so many years ago, when I never dreamed of having them.
An expanded cultural experience
Beyond the performances, the program includes accessible sessions, a formative workshop, and post-show conversations with the public, making the show a broader cultural experience that blends artistic enjoyment, education, and dialogue. The theater reaffirms itself as a space for encounter, listening, and imagination.
It is a privilege to have João Falcão directing at Teatro do SESI, at Centro Cultural Fiesp, especially with a work like “O Pequenino Grão de Areia,” which stands out for its delicacy and sensitivity. The show presents a narrative about determination and love, conveyed with subtlety, without relying on romantic clichés. We expect a singular and enchanting production, in line with SESI-SP’s mission to provide access to quality art and culture, free of charge and in a democratic way.
