While closed for new exhibitions, the Museu das Amazônias launches a free outdoor program with 100+ activities across Belém’s Porto Futuro complex.
The Museu das Amazônias (MAZ) in Belém, Brazil, is temporarily closed to the public as it prepares to mount new exhibitions. Rather than going quiet, however, the museum is going mobile. Starting in March, the institution launches MAZ em Movimento (MAZ in Motion) — a program that brings workshops, immersive experiences, guided visits, talks, and live music to public spaces in and around the Porto Futuro Complex.
The concept is straightforward: if the public cannot come inside, the museum goes to the public. From March through June 2026, the program will deliver more than 100 free activities, forging connections between the Amazon region, its people, and the city of Belém.
“MAZ in Motion was born from the desire to keep the museum active, even with visits suspended. It is about exchanging traditional knowledge, and fostering affective, educational and creative encounters with the public — reinforcing that MAZ is a living space, in constant dialogue with Belém and the Amazons.” — Grazielle Giacomo, MAZ Technical Manager
A museum across many spaces
MAZ in Motion operates across four main fronts. Vivências MAZ offers immersive experiences using virtual reality, workshops, and roundtables focused on territory, culture, and sustainability. Guided Visits around Porto Futuro take place every Sunday, expanding the museum experience into public space by exploring the historical, archaeological, and landscape heritage of Belém’s waterfront.
MAZ Música turns the museum’s veranda into a monthly stage for artists and musical rhythms from the Amazon. And the MAZ Workshops, held at the Caixa Cultural, cover artistic, scientific, and hands-on activities exploring Amazonian ways of living and thinking.
March workshops schedule
All workshops take place at Caixa Cultural, Porto Futuro Complex, and are open to various age groups:

March’s MAZ Música edition celebrates Hip Hop made in the Amazon. On March 13, the day opens at 10am with a beginner graffiti workshop by artist Santo at Caixa Cultural. At 3pm, a panel titled “Hip-Hop as museology for imagining new Amazons” brings together Mina Ribeirinha, Pelé do Manifesto, Shaira Manajosy, and Rafael dos Santos (Museu do Hip Hop) at the Caixa Cultural Theater.
At 4:30pm, Bboy Mael Rodrigues leads a Break Dance workshop. Then from 6pm to 10pm, the MAZ veranda hosts the Batalha de São Brás battle, pocket shows by Bruna BG and Moraes MV, and sets by DJ Matemba.
Vivências MAZ and Guided Visits
On March 27, Vivências MAZ presents “Fishing Engineering, River Aesthetics, and Technologies of Ancestry,” featuring the workshop “Floating Letters,” led by a traditional letter-carver, at 2pm at the Amazon Bioeconomy and Innovation Park.
The Guided Visits “Footsteps of History: museum and society” run every Sunday at 10am and 4pm at the MAZ outdoor area – Porto Futuro II, with a meeting point at the museum’s veranda. The inaugural walk takes place on March 8, led by Pará historian Michel Pinho.
