Civil Police delegates and endometriosis specialists gather at Museu Ciência e Vida on April 16, from 9am to 5pm, free admission.
The Museu Ciência e Vida (Museum of Science and Life), run by the Fundação Cecierj in Duque de Caxias, near Rio de Janeiro, hosts the event “Woman, Rights, Science and Life” on Wednesday. The full-day program brings together police delegates, activists, and medical professionals to address two pressing issues: gender-based violence and women’s health.
The event is especially aimed at girls and women, but open to everyone. Its goal is to build a space for information, awareness, and empowerment around topics that remain urgent in Brazilian society.
Morning: tackling gender-based violence
In the morning, Civil Police delegates Karla Ribeiro and Beatriz Barreto lead an in-depth discussion on women’s rights and gender-based violence. The conversation draws on recent high-profile cases — many involving teenagers and young women — to explore prevention strategies and legal protections.
The session also highlights the role that cultural institutions like museums can play in broadening public dialogue and promoting education as a tool against violence.
Afternoon: endometriosis and gynecological health
The afternoon shifts focus to women’s health, centering on endometriosis — a chronic condition that remains widely underdiagnosed, especially among young women. Social activist Andréa Brígida and physician Ricardo José de Souza will guide the conversation through symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options.
One of the disease’s most common warning signs — intense pre-menstrual cramps — is frequently dismissed as normal. That normalization can delay diagnosis for years, significantly affecting quality of life. The session aims to change that through open, accessible information.
“I believe this event will not only spark interest in the subject, but also give voice to many girls and women whose rights are being violated and even ‘hidden’ — especially when it comes to their physical integrity and gynecological health. I believe that lack of information is also a form of violence, which is why I commend the Museum and director Mônica Santos for the sensitivity to address this topic.” — Andréa Brígida, social activist
By weaving together rights, health, and citizenship in a single program, the Museu Ciência e Vida reinforces its role as an agent of social change in the Baixada Fluminense region.
