The Nossos Brasis: between dream and reality exhibition has been extended to February 1, spanning 100 years of Brazilian art at CAIXA Cultural Brasília.
On view since October 21, 2025, the show was originally set to close on January 18, but will now remain open with an ambitious proposal: mapping Brazilian art from 1920 to 2020. It brings together 79 works by 50 artists in a rare convergence of collections from Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasília.
For the first time, pieces from different institutions and private collections are shown side by side to build a new visual narrative of the country. Paintings, sculptures, tapestries, photographs, installations, and objects guide visitors through a century of artistic production—revealing a Brazil that is plural, contradictory, and inventive, always poised between dream and reality.
A rare cross-collection dialogue
What makes the exhibition stand out is not only its historical sweep, but the way collections are woven together. The route sets up direct dialogues across eras and styles, linking the modernist drive of the 1920s to the expressive force of contemporary urban art.
In practice, the canonical meets the popular. Studio practice meets the street. Major names in Brazilian art history share space with contemporary production, prompting fresh readings of how Brazil’s visual identity took shape.
Three interconnected sections
Curated by Denise Mattar and organized from an artistic concept by Rafael Dragaud, Nossos Brasis unfolds across three thematic sections. Instead of a strict timeline, the show operates as a dynamic mosaic, where themes and tensions echo across decades.
“Voices of the Tropics” examines the idea of Brazil as an exotic paradise—while exposing tensions between nature and colonization, beauty and violence, myth and critique. It features artists such as Tarsila do Amaral, Burle Marx, Beatriz Milhazes, Lygia Pape, Hélio Oiticica, Glauco Rodrigues, Denilson Baniwa, Ernesto Neto, Adriana Varejão, Rosana Paulino, among others.
“Voices of the Street” highlights Brazil’s popular, collective pulse, where art draws from celebrations, rituals, and everyday gestures. Works by Di Cavalcanti, Heitor dos Prazeres, Djanira, Volpi, Portinari, Beatriz Milhazes, Eduardo Kobra, and others translate the visual power of community life and urban culture.
“Voices of Silence” turns to the intimate and psychological. Memory, spirituality, and pain become creative material in works by Maria Auxiliadora, Arthur Bispo do Rosário, Ismael Nery, Maria Lídia Magliani, Farnese de Andrade, Flávio Cerqueira, Vik Muniz, Nelson Leirner, among others.
Accessibility and education
Beyond attendance, the exhibition emphasizes education and inclusion. Visitors can access audio description, Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) interpretation, tactile materials, and guided visits, alongside professional training workshops held in communities.
In its final days in Brasília, Nossos Brasis: between dream and reality renews its invitation: revisit—or discover—a century of Brazilian art through new angles, in an experience driven by color, gesture, and shared histories.
The exhibition is presented by CAIXA Cultural Brasília in partnership with Agência Pira, sponsored by CAIXA and the Government of Brazil.
