Brazilian choreographer Michelle Moura uses ventriloquism to split voice from body, mirroring our polarized, information-overloaded world. São Paulo, March 2026.
When the voice breaks free
Michelle Moura, a Brazilian artist based in Berlin, brings Overtongue to Brazil — a dance solo that explores the disembodied voice as a metaphor for the informational chaos and polarization defining our era. Performances run on March 26, 27, 28, and 29, 2026, at Sesc Avenida Paulista in São Paulo.
In this piece, the voice is not simply speech or language — it becomes something sensory. Through ventriloquism, Moura makes the voice appear detached from the body, generating a disorienting, visceral experience that challenges how audiences perceive sound and meaning.
Speech as rupture
The performance builds on what the artist calls “deviations in speech” — a gestural multiplicity that separates voice from body. Like an echo without origin, the voice leaves the performer without truly belonging to her. The result is a paradoxical language that defies the logic of linear communication.
A chimeric body moves through sonic dissociations and physical landscapes driven, at times, by grotesque mechanisms. The dramaturgy by Maikon K and sound design by Kaj Duncan David sustain this unstable architecture — where meaning and nonsense coexist in constant tension.
Like an entity suspended between matter and mind, the voice abandons the performer’s body without ever truly belonging to her.
An internationally built show
Overtongue is a co-production between CND Centre National de la Danse Pantin (Paris, France) and Something Great (Berlin, Germany), with support from Sophiensaele (Berlin) and Profice Paraná. The piece was developed during residencies at leading European institutions, including Vooruit (Ghent), STUK (Leuven), Tanzhaus Zurich, and Lake Studios (Berlin).
The Brazilian production is handled by the collective Corpo Rastreado. The full team also includes costumes by Thelma Bonavita and lighting by Annegret Schalke.
