Shell Award-winning Teatro da Vertigem is back with Agropeça in São Paulo — a rodeo, beloved childhood characters, and a sharp critique of agribusiness.
Agropeça Returns with a Critical Eye on Rural Brazil
Teatro da Vertigem brings back its acclaimed production Agropeça to São Paulo, running from February 27 to March 29, 2026, at the Espaço Cultural Elza Soares — known as Galpão do MST (Alameda Eduardo Prado, 474). The show, winner of the prestigious Shell Award for Direction and Set Design, is part of the company’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
Conceived and directed by Antonio Araújo, with a final script by Marcelino Freire and co-direction by Eliana Monteiro, the production casts a critical gaze on Brazil’s rural universe and the far-reaching influence of agribusiness on contemporary Brazilian society. The rodeo serves as the central theatrical language — a metaphor for a country that keeps reproducing age-old structures of exploitation.
Childhood Icons as Mirrors of the Nation
The production draws on iconic characters from Brazilian children’s literature: Emília, Narizinho, Pedrinho, Tia Nastácia, Dona Benta, Visconde de Sabugosa, and Marquês de Rabicó — all creations of author Monteiro Lobato, from the beloved series Sítio do Picapau Amarelo. In a bold and free reinterpretation, these figures become symbolic and narrative pillars of the work.
Divided into three sections narrated by Pedrinho, Tia Nastácia, and Emília, the show weaves together recent episodes from Brazilian political life, rural imagery, and the cultural legacy of Lobato’s universe. True to Vertigem’s signature style, the immersive staging transforms the entire venue into an arena of political, symbolic, and social conflict.
“With Agropeça, Teatro da Vertigem offers an honest, vibrant, and necessary response to the urgencies of our time, betting on a powerful, risk-taking performance deeply connected to the fractures of the country.” — Valmir Santos, Teatrojornal
