Textile waste turns into fashion at MAC Niterói

Work uniforms and fishing nets become sustainable fashion in SENAI CETIQT’s “Upcycling Challenge” exhibition at MAC Niterói until March 4.

The exhibition “Upcycling Challenge: Sustainable Paths for the Future of Fashion” showcases creative designs made from recycled textiles. It opens on February 25 at 3 p.m. at Niterói’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) and runs until March 4.

The designs were created through an international exchange project between SENAI CETIQT students and the Belgian institution Helmo. Five students from each country collaborated to turn discarded work uniforms and ocean-recovered fishing nets into new sustainable fashion pieces.

In SENAI CETIQT’s state-of-the-art fashion labs, participants developed their collections under the guidance of professors and the mentorship of stylist Almir França, a sustainability expert. The result is a series of garments that challenge conventional design and highlight the value of circular economy in the fashion industry.

For Larissa Fidalgo, Fashion Design coordinator at SENAI CETIQT, the exhibition reinforces the school’s role in connecting creative education with contemporary cultural practices. “Exhibiting at MAC Niterói expands students’ perception of design and the transformative power of collaboration,” she notes.
