With a World Athletics label, competitors from 16 countries, and 10,000 sign-ups, Florianópolis Half Marathon is shaping up as a landmark race on May 2–3.
The Florianópolis International Half Marathon is heading into its final registration stretch with a record-breaking 10,000 confirmed athletes — and organizers expect to reach 12,000 before the starting gun fires on Avenida Beira-Mar Norte on May 2 and 3. It is the largest field in the event’s history.
Runners from all 26 Brazilian states and the Federal District are joined by competitors from 16 countries, underlining the international reach the race has built over the years. The gender split is remarkably even — 50% women and 50% men — with participants ranging in age from 2 to 94.
World Athletics Label and National Championship
This year, the race earned the prestigious World Athletics Road Race Label, the highest recognition awarded by the global governing body of athletics. The certification guarantees a precisely measured course, enhanced safety standards, and — crucially — finishing times that count toward the World Athletics global rankings, drawing elite runners to the event.
Florianópolis also hosts the South Regional leg of the Brazilian Road Running Championship, organized by the CBAt. The national final will take place in Rio de Janeiro. A highlight on the technical program is the 1-mile race (1.6 km), added to the official schedule this edition.
Double Challenge and Kids’ Race
For those who want to push further, a special double challenge awaits: run the 10 km on Saturday and the 21 km on Sunday to earn an exclusive finisher medal. The program covers all levels, making the event welcoming for first-timers and seasoned runners alike.
On Saturday (May 2), the outdoor parking area of Villa Romana shopping center hosts the Oakberry Run Kids, with courses designed for children ages 2 to 13. The initiative broadens the event’s reach and plants the seeds of an active lifestyle early on. The race Expo and kit pickup also take place at the mall in the days leading up to the event.
Social Commitment and Economic Impact
The Florianópolis Half Marathon stands out for its social and environmental commitments as well. Training runs ahead of race day serve as food drives for the Fundação Somar. Waste generated throughout the event is repurposed and transformed into toys and urban furniture, such as park benches.
As part of the Sportsland circuit, the race drives significant economic activity across tourism, hotels, restaurants, and local retail — making it one of the highest-impact road running events in Brazil.
“We are living a historic edition, with a record number of registrations and a very wide diversity of athletes, both in profile and in origin. The Florianópolis Half Marathon has established itself as a sought-after race, not only for its technical level, but for the experience it delivers. We are now entering the final registration phase, and this is the opportunity for anyone who still wants to be part of this movement that brings together sport, health, and quality of life.” — Thiago Mansur, co-founder of Sportsland
