A work by Mary Weatherford — held in MoMA’s collection — makes its Brazilian debut at Simões de Assis’s booth at SP-Arte 2026 this April in São Paulo.
Simões de Assis returns to SP-Arte 2026 with a booth that bridges modern and contemporary production, bringing together Brazilian and international artists across painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, relief, and textiles. The unifying thread is a reflection on materiality — how different surfaces and media shape meaning.
Mary Weatherford’s Brazilian Debut
The booth’s headline moment is the first-ever presentation in Brazil of a work by American painter Mary Weatherford (born 1963, Ojai, California). One of the most significant painters of her generation, Weatherford is known for her bold engagement with the legacy of American abstraction. She pushes the medium further by incorporating sculptural elements — most notably neon tubes — directly into her canvases. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the MoMA in New York and the Tate Modern in London.
Artists Making Waves Internationally
The booth also features works by Ayrson Heráclito, recently announced as part of the main exhibition of the 61st Venice Biennale. Flávio Cerqueira presents a brand-new sculpture — a significant milestone following the year-long touring exhibition Flávio Cerqueira: Um Escultor de Significados, shown across multiple venues of the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil.
French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, celebrated for his blown-glass sculptures, is currently featured in a group show at the Fondation Cartier in Paris. Diambe joins the booth while simultaneously showing at the Kunsthalle Basel in Switzerland. Gonçalo Ivo opens a new exhibition in March inspired by Édouard Glissant’s concept of “relation” at Maison Gacha, Paris.
Thalita Hamaoui has a solo show running at the Simões de Assis São Paulo space during the fair and participates in a group exhibition of the Jorge M. Pérez Collection at El Espacio 23 in Miami. Mexican artist Gabriel de la Mora recently opened solo shows at the Museo Jumex in Mexico City and the Museu Oscar Niemeyer in Curitiba.
Historic Presences and New Acquisitions
Carlos Cruz-Diez is currently the subject of a solo exhibition at the gallery’s Curitiba space and features in individual shows at the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA) in New York and the Pérez Art Museum Miami. Zéh Palito recently had a work acquired by El Museo del Barrio in New York and just closed his first solo museum show in Brazil, at MAC_Bahia in Salvador.
