Dori Caymmi launches “Utopia” in intimate Rio shows

Brazilian music legend Dori Caymmi takes the stage every Tuesday in April at Teatro Ipanema to launch his new album “Utopia,” a 56-year ode to poet Paulo César Pinheiro.

Singer, composer, and arranger Dori Caymmi is set for a four-night run at the Teatro Ipanema Rubens Corrêa in Rio de Janeiro to celebrate the release of “Utopia”, his newest album on the Biscoito Fino label. The shows take place every Tuesday in April — on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th — at 8 PM, in an intimate voice-and-guitar format designed specifically for the Terças no Ipanema series.

One of the most important composers of his generation, Dori brings a deeply personal program to one of Rio’s most storied stages. The format strips the music down to its essence — just voice, guitar, and decades of mastery.

A 56-year creative friendship

“Utopia” is rooted in Dori’s long bond with poet and lyricist Paulo César Pinheiro, a partnership and friendship now spanning 56 years. All songs on the album were composed by Dori, who also wrote the arrangements. The record also features collaborations with other longtime partners.

Classics and a tribute to Nana Caymmi

Beyond the new album, the Terças no Ipanema shows span multiple chapters of Dori’s career. Compositions such as “Canto Sedutor,” “Voz de Mágoa,” “O Velho do Mar,” and “Velho Piano” will be featured. The evening also includes a heartfelt tribute to his sister, Nana Caymmi, and renditions of classics by Dorival Caymmi, Tom Jobim, and Vinicius de Moraes.

The Terças no Ipanema project

Launched in January 2025, Terças no Ipanema brought live music back to this iconic venue. Its debut season featured 50 shows with an average 90% capacity rate. The project operates under its own artistic curation and was developed through a partnership with the City of Rio de Janeiro, which incorporated the theater into the Municipal Theater Network.

A theater born in a backyard

Founded in 1968 by actors and directors Rubens Corrêa and Ivan Albuquerque, the Teatro Municipal Ipanema Rubens Corrêa began as a rehearsal space in Rubens’ own backyard in the Ipanema neighborhood. It went on to launch the careers of artists such as José Wilker, José de Abreu, and the legendary Asdrúbal Trouxe o Trombone theater group. After renovations, the space fully reopened in June 2012 under the Municipal Secretariat of Culture.
