After selling out venues in São Paulo, Brazilian trombonist Joabe Reis brings “Drive Slow” to Itaipava on Feb. 20 before heading to London’s Ronnie Scott’s.
A world-class stop in the Rio highlands
Soberano Jazz Club, nestled in the mountain town of Itaipava, Petrópolis, cements its place on the global jazz circuit by hosting Joabe Reis on Friday, February 20, at 9 PM. The show marks the live debut of his critically acclaimed album, Drive Slow – A Última das Fantasias, and serves as the final Brazilian stop before an international run across Europe and Australia.
The Itaipava date follows a string of sold-out performances in São Paulo and an appearance at the Garanhuns Jazz Festival in Pernambuco. Come April, Reis takes the stage at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s in London, before continuing to Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, Gliwice (Poland), Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.
The album reshaping Brazilian jazz
Drive Slow pushes well beyond traditional jazz. The record masterfully blends Hip-Hop, Neo Soul, and R&B into a modern sound that feels equally at home on city streets and at major international festivals. Critics have hailed it as a landmark in Brazilian instrumental music.
Drive Slow expands jazz’s frontiers by fusing it with Hip-Hop, Neo Soul and R&B — a sound that bridges the streets and the world’s biggest festival stages.
Reis performs with a stellar quintet: Josué Lopez (saxophone), Bruno Santos (trumpet), Frederico Heliodoro (bass), Williams Mello (drums), and Marcos Tavares (keyboards) — a lineup built to capture the full depth and groove of the new album.
Bridging cultural circuits
The choice of Itaipava speaks to a larger vision. Raquel and Sérgio Saraceni, the founders of Soberano, have built a world-class venue surrounded by mountain scenery — one that draws artists who would otherwise only perform in major cities or on international stages. That makes this show a rare opportunity for Petrópolis residents, Rio weekend visitors, and tourists exploring the Imperial City.
