Nearing six decades of music, Brazilian samba icon Paulinho da Viola brings rare gems and classics to Qualistage on April 18 in Rio de Janeiro.
A flame that never goes out
There is a quiet but meaningful difference between fire and flame. Fire burns bright and fades. A flame endures — steady, persistent, alive. In the poetry of Paulinho da Viola, that distinction captures nearly sixty years of an unbroken relationship with samba.
His new show, Quando o Samba Chama (When Samba Calls), is built around that image. The title comes from one of his own verses — a poet who resurfaces, casts seeds into the air, and shares his light with the world. This is not a farewell tour. It is a summons.
But if time finds itself in the setting sun / And a piece of blue is drawn from the sky / The poet resurfaces and casts the seed into the air / And happily shares his light / When samba calls
Deep cuts and beloved classics
The show brings together two worlds: the signature hits that loyal audiences know by heart and the rarely performed songs that Paulinho has kept off stage for years. Expect classics like Foi um Rio que Passou em Minha Vida, Argumento, Onde a Dor Não Tem Razão, and Pecado Capital, alongside deeper cuts from his extensive catalog.
The night is an open invitation — to long-time fans and to those just discovering what many already know: that Paulinho da Viola is an ocean of poetry and music, always wider than you expect.
Rooted in tradition
Paulinho grew up in Botafogo, in Rio’s south zone, in a household that was a gathering point for Brazilian music. The son of guitarist Cesar Faria, he spent his childhood around legends like Pixinguinha and Jacob do Bandolim, who regularly visited his home.
Over the decades, he built a body of work that bridges choro, samba, carnival escola de samba culture, and the creative vanguard of the 1960s. Tracks like Coração Leviano, Timoneiro, and Dança da Solidão are now permanent fixtures in Brazil’s national songbook. Any serious conversation about Brazilian popular music leads back to him.
