Brazilian choro and concert music collide in a free show at Sala São Paulo on March 1st, at 10:50 AM.
Saxophonist, composer and arranger Samuel Pompeo takes the stage at Sala São Paulo in an unprecedented collaboration with the Brazilian Army Symphonic Band. The concert is part of the Matinais program and takes place on March 1st, at 10:50 AM, with free admission.
Choro Hodierno Meets the Symphonic World
The concert brings together the Samuel Pompeo Quintet and the renowned symphonic ensemble to celebrate the dialogue between Choro Hodierno — a concept Pompeo developed during his doctoral research — and the tradition of concert music.
The performance explores new soundscapes born from the union of two distinct musical worlds: the creative freedom and improvisational spirit of a jazz quintet alongside the timbral richness and power of a full symphonic band. The result moves fluidly between choro, jazz, and classical music.
“This concert represents not only a milestone in my artistic journey, but also an opportunity to amplify the richness of choro in dialogue with large symphonic formations. It is a way of reaffirming the vitality of this Brazilian musical language in new dimensions.” — Samuel Pompeo
Program: Original Works and New Arrangements
The setlist features original compositions and new arrangements that highlight Pompeo’s signature approach to crossing aesthetic boundaries:
Symphony No. 2 — The Big Apple “A New York Symphony” (Johan Meij) | Janeiro 15 (Samuel Pompeo) — arranged by Dino Barioni | Choro vermelho (Daniel Grajew) — arranged by Samuel Pompeo | De cachimbo (Domingos Pecci) — arranged by Samuel Pompeo.
